Kanunnah Aquatic Ecological Sampling.
Kanunnah is leader within this field - Call Todd now.
There has been a significant rise in the need for aquatic ecological sampling under the environmental approvals process. Aquatic assessments must now meet State and Commonwealth legislative requirements and consider not only direct impacts but also those offsite and downstream. Industry, agriculture and landowners can also have assessments carried out as part of their voluntary contribution to ecological sustainability. Projects on waterways can measure freshwater ecosystem recovery by having ecological assessments carried out on a regular basis.
Kanunnah can carry out a rapid assessment of your waterway to give an assessment of the health of the waterway. We can also determine impacts upon the waterway at a point source. Remediation works are generally difficult to measure, Kanunnah can carry out rapid AUSRIVAS assessments over time to determine the change in aquatic biota, and therefore the health of the waterway.
Kanunnah uses the AUSRIVAS technique for sampling freshwater ecosystems. This method of sampling involves collecting the invertebrates that live in the ecosystem. The collected invertebrates are sorted and identified. A modelling system based in Canberra is then accessed to compare the site tested, to a pristine/reference site with similar habitat characteristics. A score is then given, reflecting the health of the waterway tested. The AUSRIVAS method is a very robust and quick sampling method used to determine the health of the waterway. Similar assessments are used in the USA and UK. Money can be saved by avoiding long term testing (data loggers, multiple chemical tests, expensive equipment) and using the relatively inexpensive AUSRIVAS technique twice annually (generally autumn and spring). One off tests can also be carried out for a snapshot of the health of your river/creek.
We offer ongoing compliance monitoring (e.g. water quality) and habitat condition monitoring. AUSRIVAS satisfies many environmental requirements of government, although it is important though to check with your monitoring requirements to determine whether AUSRIVAS is suited to your needs.
Kanunnah can undertake quality checks of specimens or samples for other investigators or laboratories as well as the identification of samples collected by those not accredited in AUSRIVAS identification and modelling.
Kanunnah is a small operation with low overheads and more than competitive prices, we offer rapid assessments with easily understood outcomes. Short reports that clients generally prefer are our specialty.
